How to Use AccessPON SCS-90 in Your Formulations

Understanding AccessPON SCS-90

AccessPON SCS-90 is a powerful cleansing ingredient, known in the industry as a surfactant. Think of a surfactant as a magnet for dirt and oil. One end of the surfactant molecule grabs onto the oils and grime on your hair and skin, while the other end holds onto water. When you rinse, the water pulls the surfactant away, taking all the unwanted dirt and oil with it. This is what makes your shampoos and body washes effective.

Based on the INCI Sodium Coco Sulfate, AccessPON SCS-90 is derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil. It is an anionic (negatively charged) surfactant, which is why it’s so good at creating thick, rich, satisfying foam. Many formulators choose it as a naturally derived alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) while still achieving excellent cleansing performance. Because this version comes in a high-purity powder form (approximately 90% active), a little goes a long way.

Formulation Tips

The right usage rate for AccessPON SCS-90 depends entirely on your final product format. For liquid products (shampoos, body washes), use between 5–15%. Start on the lower end and combine with milder co-surfactants (like Cocamidopropyl Betaine) to create a gentle yet effective cleansing system. For solid products (shampoo bars, syndet bars), the usage rate is much higher, typically ranging from 30% up to 80% of the total formula. In these products, AccessPON SCS-90 provides both the cleansing power and part of the solid structure of the bar.

To use it, dissolve AccessPON SCS-90 in the heated water phase. It is not cold-process compatible. Heat your water to around 70–75 °C (158–167 °F) and slowly add the powder while stirring. Continue to stir gently until it is fully dissolved. Be patient, as it can take time to fully dissolve, and avoid whipping too much air into the mixture at this stage. Once dissolved, you can proceed with your formulation, combining it with other phases or cooling down to add heat-sensitive ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions About AccessPON SCS-90

It’s the primary cleansing agent. It creates the foam and does the work of removing dirt and oil from the skin and hair. It’s especially popular for making solid shampoo bars.
Both are effective cleansers, but AccessPON SCS-90 (Sodium Coco Sulfate) is derived from a broader range of coconut oil fatty acids. This results in a larger molecule that many formulators consider gentler than SLS, while still providing excellent foam and cleansing.
For a liquid shampoo or body wash, use 5–15%. For a solid shampoo bar where this ingredient provides the structure, use 30–80% of your total formula (many bars land around 40–80%).
Yes. Heat your water phase to about 70–75 °C (158–167 °F) and stir the powder in until completely dissolved before continuing with your recipe. It will not dissolve in cold water.
Absolutely. It is one of the most popular ingredients for solid shampoo and syndet bars, providing both cleansing power and contributing to a firm, solid texture.
In liquid formulas, pair with amphoteric co-surfactants like Cocamidopropyl Betaine to increase mildness and foam quality. In solid bars, blend with other solid surfactants such as Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) for a creamier lather, and add butters (e.g., shea or cocoa) for conditioning.
