How to Use AccessPON SCS-90 in Your Formulations
Understanding AccessPON SCS-90
AccessPON SCS-90 is a powerful cleansing ingredient, known in the industry as a surfactant. Think of a surfactant as a magnet for dirt and oil. One end of the surfactant molecule grabs onto the oils and grime on your hair and skin, while the other end holds onto water. When you rinse, the water pulls the surfactant away, taking all the unwanted dirt and oil with it. This is what makes your shampoos and body washes effective.
Based on the INCI Sodium Coco Sulfate, AccessPON SCS-90 is derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil. It is an anionic (negatively charged) surfactant, which is why it’s so good at creating thick, rich, satisfying foam. Many formulators choose it as a naturally derived alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) while still achieving excellent cleansing performance. Because this version comes in a high-purity powder form (approximately 90% active), a little goes a long way.
Formulation Tips
The right usage rate for AccessPON SCS-90 depends entirely on your final product format. For liquid products (shampoos, body washes), use between 5–15%. Start on the lower end and combine with milder co-surfactants (like Cocamidopropyl Betaine) to create a gentle yet effective cleansing system. For solid products (shampoo bars, syndet bars), the usage rate is much higher, typically ranging from 30% up to 80% of the total formula. In these products, AccessPON SCS-90 provides both the cleansing power and part of the solid structure of the bar.
To use it, dissolve AccessPON SCS-90 in the heated water phase. It is not cold-process compatible. Heat your water to around 70–75 °C (158–167 °F) and slowly add the powder while stirring. Continue to stir gently until it is fully dissolved. Be patient, as it can take time to fully dissolve, and avoid whipping too much air into the mixture at this stage. Once dissolved, you can proceed with your formulation, combining it with other phases or cooling down to add heat-sensitive ingredients.
