How to Use AccessFIX K60 in Your Formulations
Understanding AccessFIX K60
AccessFIX K60 is a classic, reliable ingredient that gives hair styling products their hold. It’s a type of polymer called PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) that forms a clear, flexible film on the hair. Think of this film as a lightweight, invisible net that keeps hair fibers in place, locking your style once the product dries.
For the technical formulator, AccessFIX K60 is a specific grade of PVP where the “K60” indicates its molecular weight. Compared to lower grades like K30, K60 provides higher solution viscosity and stronger hold, making it ideal for strong-hold styling systems. It is highly water-soluble, enabling crystal-clear gels and easily sprayable solutions in aqueous formats.
Formulation Tips
Proper dispersion is key. Because AccessFIX K60 is a water-loving powder, it can clump if added too quickly. Slowly sprinkle the powder into a vigorous vortex of the water phase with continuous mixing. Hydrate until the solution is smooth and clear.
- Light to Medium Hold: 1–3% for flexible creams and light mousses.
- Strong Hold: 4–6% for firm hair gels and strong-hold sprays.
- Extra-Strong Hold: 6–8% for maximum-hold sculpting gels and freeze sprays.
AccessFIX K60 works well with common rheology modifiers (e.g., carbomers) to build gel structure. Add small amounts of plasticizers such as glycerin, panthenol, or propylene glycol to reduce film brittleness and help prevent flaking at higher use levels. It performs reliably in typical hair-care pH ranges (about 4–7).
