Performance & Formulation Insights for Vitamin D3
How Vitamin D3 Works
Cholecalciferol, or Vitamin D3, is a pro-hormone that plays a vital role in nearly every organ, including the skin. Skin cells (keratinocytes) are unique in their ability to both synthesize Vitamin D3 from sun exposure and respond to it through Vitamin D Receptors (VDR). When applied topically, Vitamin D3 binds to these receptors, influencing gene expression related to cell growth, differentiation, and immunity. It helps regulate the orderly turnover of skin cells, reinforces the skin’s barrier function, and modulates the production of antimicrobial peptides, which are crucial components of the skin’s innate immune system. Its antioxidant properties also help neutralize free radicals, protecting skin from oxidative stress.
Formulation Guidelines
This Vitamin D3 is delivered in a stable, oil-based carrier (MCT Oil), which simplifies its use in anhydrous and emulsion-based systems. For optimal results, add it to the oil phase of your formulation. It is sensitive to high heat and UV light, so it should be incorporated during the cool-down phase at temperatures below 40°C. Maintain the final formulation pH between 4.5 and 6.5 to ensure stability. This active is compatible with other oil-soluble vitamins like Vitamin E (Tocopherol), which can help enhance its antioxidant stability, as well as with ceramides and fatty acids for comprehensive barrier support.
