Performance & Formulation Insights for Vitamin D3
How Vitamin D3 Works
Cholecalciferol, the active form of Vitamin D3, is a pro-hormone that plays a vital role in skin homeostasis. Topically applied, it interacts with Vitamin D Receptors (VDR) present in skin cells, particularly keratinocytes. This interaction helps regulate cellular proliferation and differentiation, ensuring a healthy and orderly skin cell life cycle. By promoting the maturation of keratinocytes, Vitamin D3 strengthens the epidermal barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and improving the skin’s resilience. Furthermore, it exhibits powerful immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, helping to calm redness and irritation associated with various skin conditions.
Formulation Guidelines
This Vitamin D3 active is provided as a concentrated, oil-based solution for excellent stability and ease of use. The recommended usage rate is between 0.1% and 1.0%. As an oil-soluble ingredient, it should be incorporated into the oil phase of your formulation. Due to the sensitivity of Vitamin D3 to heat, light, and oxidation, add it during the cool-down phase at temperatures below 40°C (104°F). To ensure maximum stability in the final product, formulate within a pH range of 4.5–6.5 and consider using opaque or UV-protective packaging. The inclusion of an antioxidant like Vitamin E (Tocopherol) can further protect the integrity of Cholecalciferol.
