Performance & Formulation Insights for MELavo
How Glycolipids Work as a Bio-Emulsifier
MELavo is a cutting-edge bio-emulsifier produced through microbial fermentation, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional synthetic emulsifiers. Its amphiphilic glycolipids contain both hydrophilic sugar and lipophilic lipid moieties, enabling rapid alignment at the oil–water interface to form a stable lamellar liquid crystal network. This network effectively binds oil and water phases, preventing separation and supporting long-term emulsion stability. Because this structure closely resembles the stratum corneum’s lipid matrix, MELavo integrates with the skin to reinforce the barrier and help reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), contributing to smoother texture and improved hydration.
Technical Advantages & Formulation Guidelines
MELavo is effective at 2–8% and can serve as the primary emulsifier or as a co-emulsifier to optimize stability and sensoriality. It is compatible with a wide range of ingredients, including natural oils, esters, silicones, and common skincare actives, and performs across pH 4.0–8.0. For robust, elegant oil-in-water emulsions, add MELavo to either the water or oil phase, heat both phases to 75–80°C, then homogenize and cool with gentle stirring. Resulting emulsions typically exhibit fine particle size, a glossy appearance, and a light, non-greasy skin feel.
