Performance & Formulation Insights for Hyaluronic Acid MMW
How High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid Works
This grade of Hyaluronic Acid features a high molecular weight (1.0–1.5 MDa), meaning the molecule is too large to penetrate the deeper layers of the epidermis. Instead, it functions as a superior surface hydrator. Upon application, it forms a flexible, non-occlusive, viscoelastic film on the skin that attracts and retains moisture, helping bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This film reinforces the skin barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and delivers an immediate smoothing and plumping effect that softens the look of fine dehydration lines.
Formulation Guidelines
Hyaluronic Acid MMW is a fine white powder readily soluble in water. To avoid clumping, slowly sprinkle the powder into the vortex of the water phase under constant, high-shear mixing. Continue mixing until fully dispersed, then allow adequate time for complete hydration; the solution will transform into a clear, viscous gel. The optimal pH for a 0.5% solution is between 5.5 and 7.5, making it compatible with most skin and hair care formulations. It is stable alongside common cosmetic ingredients and can be incorporated into serums, emulsions (water or cool-down phase), and gel systems.
Key Formulation Benefits
- Intense Surface Hydration: Instantly binds moisture to the skin’s surface for a plump, dewy, hydrated appearance.
- Barrier Reinforcement: Forms a protective moisture-binding film that helps reduce TEWL and defends against environmental stressors.
- Visibly Smoothes Skin: The hydrating film fills in fine dehydration lines for a softer, smoother look.
- Elegant Rheology: Creates luxurious, silky, non-tacky gels and enhances sensorial glide even at low concentrations.
- High Purity & Stability: Fermentation-derived sodium hyaluronate (>95% purity) that is consistent and easy to formulate.
- Versatile Application: Suitable for facial skincare, eye care, body care, and color cosmetics.
