How Beta Carotene Works
Beta Carotene is a carotenoid with powerful antioxidant activity and pro-vitamin A functionality. Topically, it helps neutralize singlet oxygen and other free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental pollutants, helping to protect collagen and elastin from oxidative damage and mitigating visible signs of photoaging. Skin cells can convert Beta Carotene into retinoids (Vitamin A) as needed, supporting cellular renewal and maintaining skin suppleness, especially on dry or compromised skin. Its vibrant orange hue also serves as a natural colorant in cosmetic formulations.
Formulation Guidelines
Beta Carotene is oil-soluble and should be incorporated into the oil phase of emulsions or added to anhydrous systems. Because it is sensitive to heat, light, and oxidation, add during the cool-down phase, ideally below 40°C (104°F), and package finished products in opaque or UV-protective containers. For antioxidant and skin-conditioning benefits, use at 0.05% to 0.5%; for enhanced coloration in tinted balms or self-tanners, use up to 2%. It is highly compatible with oil-phase antioxidants such as Vitamin E (Tocopherol), which can also help improve stability.
